Preparing for your first bodybuilding competition can be intimidating. You have done the heavy lifting, stuck to your diet, found the perfect supplements. All that is left is to grab your gym duffle bag and head to your first competition. You put months of work into preparing your body. You committed to the lifestyle. You need to make sure you are prepared to make the most out of your first competition. Here are a few tips to help.
Start Skin Prep Early
You will need to prep your skin even before you apply a tan. Even the best physique won’t look right with a poor tan. Start by exfoliating about two weeks before the competition. The more dead skin you remove, the better your skin will accept a tan. Next, you will want to shave every part of your body with a high-quality razor blade. An electric razor can’t cut hair short enough.
Rely On Your Community
If you go to the gym in gym wear representing a bodybuilding brand, you are already part of a community of bodybuilders. Chances are, at least one has been to a competition and can give you tips for your local circuit. They might know what the judges for the local circuit look for, for example. They might compete themselves, and be willing to offer you their wisdom.
Stick to Dark, Lightweight Clothing
When you go to the competition, you will want to wear very loose, lightweight clothing in dark colors. Chances are very good you will get tan on your clothes, and it’s harder to see on dark pants or shorts. A white shirt will be destroyed. Ditch the socks and wear flip-flops or sandals. Heavy materials can make you sweat, so consider wearing silky clothes.
Forget Sprays, Lotion, and Deodorant
Any lotions, deodorants, or sprays like cologne or hair spray can discolor and ruin your tan. Getting hairspray on your skin, for example, can turn your tan yellow, orange, or even green.
Pack Like a Boy Scout
Pack your duffle bag with everything you think you might need so you are prepared for anything. Bring water to stay hydrated, an electrolyte drink, a banana for extra potassium, and one or more towels. Don’t forget something with sugar in case your energy gets low. Remember, it is better to have and not need than need and not have.
Practice Posing
Your physique is what you’re going to display, but you need to know how to do it right. Your physique, in combination with your posing and tan, is the secret to placing highly. Mess up the posing and tan, and your physique alone may not be enough. You need to know how to display it. Start practicing your poses a month before the show. Start with 10 seconds per pose, then work up every week by 10 seconds until you can hold for 40 seconds. If you can hold a pose that long, but they only require 5 seconds, it’ll be easy.
