Understanding the difference between an academic essay, a dissertations and a thesis

When it comes to academic writing, each learning level has its own expectations on the type of academic paper that is expected. The most common papers in this field are: essays, dissertations and thesis. In this post you will get a crystal clear insight on what each type of paper entails.

 1. Academic essays

An academic essay is the simplest of all the three academic assignments. In addition, the main difference between the three assignments is that essays are way shorter than dissertations and thesis. Essays are mainly bent at exploring a subject or providing detailed information about the subject. More to that, essays also enable the student to present their personal point of view about the subject at hand. This explains why most essay questions  start with questions like; who, where, why, how and when. These questions prove that the writer simply needs to give their opinion based on research that is ready. Essays are mostly written at the graduate level as they are not too complex.

2. Dissertations

A dissertation is a form of academic writing that seeks to advance a student’s point of view after they have conducted their own research. Dissertations require the student to create fresh content which will help support their research and arguments. The fact that a dissertation requires the student to present a unique point of view does not necessarily mean that they should not handle something that has been done before. It simply means that they need to bring a fresh perspective on the same discipline. Dissertations are mostly handled by students at masters level.

3. Thesis

This is no doubt the most advanced form of academic writing. Just like in the case of a dissertation, a thesis will require a student to conduct their personal research and provide a unique point of view. However, the main difference is that a thesis is longer than a dissertation. This is because it requires the students to research and explore in a bigger way. This explains why a thesis can be time and resource consuming since it requires the student to handle a series of tasks before they can comfortably write their assignment.  Thesis papers are mainly handled by students at doctorate level.

Key points to consider when writing an essay, dissertation or thesis

When writing any of the three assignments, there are two key points that you need to put into consideration.

·         The formality of each type of assignment increases as you go up the ladder. Essays require a student to look for already published research and provide their personal opinions. This means that they are allowed to use less formal language as compared to dissertation and thesis.

·         The strength of the evidence differs. When it comes to essays, the evidence to support your findings should not be too strong as you are only giving your opinion on someone else’s research. However, dissertation and thesis will require concrete evidence to back your points.
