Being part of the military often means you have to think on your feet and improvise. This adaptability should extend to your kit, whether it’s trading out the boots you received in basic training for the best tactical boots you can find for your situation or finding the best places on your gear to keep tourniquets. Here are some tips to improve your military kit.
Get New Boots
Your first trick in improving your kit is to sideline your worn-out boots and get something more comfortable and durable. If the boots issued to you work well with your feet, you might still want a second pair just in case they wear out. You might find that boots such as the Garmont T8 boots or Nike SFB boots work better for your feet. Take into account the terrain where you are posted, and choose the boots that are best suited to the conditions.
Find Dual Uses for MOLLE Pouches
You never know what you are going to need to carry in MOLLE pouches. Dump pouches can also hold snacks, but you can also carry a multitool in a pistol mag holder. You will find that there are alternate uses for MOLLE pouches on your belt and chest rig or plate carrier. You might need somewhere to hold glow sticks, for example, and will have to improvise.
You Can Never Have Too Much Medical Supplies
Remember: Medical supplies save lives. Often, you aren’t carrying the supplies for yourself but for a medic to use. It might be used on you or a squadmate, so having extra medical supplies is essential. From chest seals to gloves, combat gauze to compression dressing, you should always have extra medical supplies. Some might go on your belt in a pouch and the rest in your ruck. Wherever you can make room for the supplies, do so. When it comes to medical supplies—the more, the better.
Proper Tourniquet Placement
Don’t keep all your lifesaving supplies in one place. You can keep a tourniquet attached to your rifle’s stock, another on your belt, one attached to your plate carrier shoulder straps, and one on your plate carrier or chest rig. A medic or squadmate might need to reach one of your tourniquets, and you might not be in a position to help or move. Having your gear spread out gives your squadmate a better chance of being able to reach at least one.
Paracord Boot Laces
Paracord has a nearly endless list of uses. Switching out your boot laces for paracord laces can help you keep a versatile utility item within reach at all times in case of emergencies.
The Last Rounds Should Be Tracers
Counting rounds can be hard in the confusion of combat. If possible, load the first three rounds, meaning the last in the mag shot, as tracer rounds instead of typical FMJs. This can then act as a signal that your mag is about to be empty.
Don’t Give Away Your Position
If any part of your kit is shiny or reflective, do what you can to change it. Scuff it, paint it, do whatever you need to ensure the sun doesn’t glint off your gear and give away your position. By the same token, if a particular piece of gear is noisy when you move, tape or tie it down. Your position is sacred, so do everything you can to preserve it.
