When you are in the military, a tactical kit is part of your everyday life. However, your gear can break, get dirty, or get lost. There are certain pieces of tactical gear that you’ll want to keep a spare of, ready to go when you need it most. Whether it’s a second pair of Army boots for different terrain or a backup knife out in the field, be sure to carry a spare of these pieces of tactical gear.
A Uniform to Cut Down on Laundry
If you only have the uniform you were issued, you might be in dire need of a spare. Having a second Army combat uniform is vital if you don’t want to constantly do laundry or worry about your uniform wearing out quickly. While your uniform is built to be durable, it will eventually wear out, and having only a single uniform means it can wear out faster than rotating with a second ACU. Plus, if your ACU suffers damage, you won’t be scrambling to replace it as you already have a backup.
A Second Pair of Army Boots
Speaking of backups, you will want a backup pair of Army boots, as well. You might want boots suited to a different terrain or simply a pair that are more comfortable for your feet than the boots you were issued. Be sure the boots conform to your branch’s regulations and requirements, such as whether a steel-toed boot is allowed or required. You might want a different pair of boots for when you need to hike long distances than the pair you wear when you are on the base. You want to have the best military boots for the situation, rather than trying to wear a single pair and hoping it works in every scenario.
A Knife in Case One Goes Dull
Having a second knife as a part of your kit is always a good idea. The first knife can go dull or get chipped, or you may not simply have access to it when needed but can get the other. You might have a knife on your belt as well as your plate carrier or your leg. Generally, you want at least one fixed knife for maximum durability, but a folding knife is easier to store in pockets or MOLLE pouches.
A Multitool for Emergencies
A single multitool on your person should suffice, but keeping a spare in your pack can be vital if you lose or damage your primary multitool. You might also carry a multitool with different tools on it, such as one that folds into a pair of scissors and one that includes a pair of pliers.
Have More Tourniquets Than You Think You Need
The old adage that “one is none and two is one” definitely holds true for tourniquets. In fact, it’s better to have four tourniquets spread out amongst your kit. In a combat situation, you may not need them, but your squadmates might. A single wound can sometimes require two tourniquets, as an exit wound may be in a different part of your body. Plus, they are also there for others to help you, should you ever need them. When it comes to being prepared for anything, always pack a spare.
