Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire vs. Tata Tigor : Choose the best sedan

Well, in this comparison, in terms of popularity, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire is the most popular vehicle here. It is a bestseller mostly among taxi-and-fleet-operators.

After introducing the factory-fitted CNG kit in the Hyundai Aura, its counterpart, the Swift Dzire, also made a foray into the sedan-CNG segment. To date, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is one of the bestselling vehicles among Maruti Suzuki cars in India.

Similarly, Indian carmaker Tata Motors also entered the CNG pool by introducing the Tata Tigor.

However, keeping the CNG topic aside, there is a stable growth in sales of the sole-petrol-powered engines of the Suzuki Swift Dzire and the Tata Tigor. Furthermore, these two sub-four-metre sedans also have more or less the same features, but, of course, these cars do miss out on a few features when compared to each other. But, in the end, customers look for mileage, and that too, when fuel prices have skyrocketed! Now, let's start weighing these two sedans and see how they stack up against each other. Additionally, you can always visit the "compare cars" section on the autoX website for further detailed insights regarding these two cars or any of their competitors.

So, let's begin.

Prices

As far as prices are concerned, the Dzire demands a premium over the Tata Tigor. The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire price starts at Rs 6.24 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.18 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom in New Delhi. In addition, the old design of the Dzire is also on the market. It carries the "Tour" moniker to distinguish it from the new model. The Dzire Tour model has a starting price of Rs 6.05 lakh, which further touches Rs 7.16 lakh (ex-showroom). Customers can also have the factory-fitted CNG variant in the old design Dzire.

On the other hand, the Tata Tigor price starts at Rs 6 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 8.59 lakh.

As for the Tata Tigor trims, there are six: XE, XM, XZ, XZ+, XMA, and XZA+. Furthermore, they total up to twelve variants.

On the contrary, the Dzire has four trims: LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+. And they make up nine variants in total.

Please note that these are prices as of September 2022 and are subject to market change without prior notice to customers. Furthermore, the carmaker has the full right to add or cut down on features without any prior notice.

Features

Both sedans are pretty loaded with features. But if you compare the CNG variants of the two, the Tata Tigor has the upper hand over the Dzire, as CNG variants tend to get fewer features. However, the non-CNG variant of the Dzire has a good number of features compared to Tata's sub-four-metre counterpart.

However, let's begin with minor comfort features that tend to be very useful. Those include rear a/c vents, cruise control, navigation, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, to name a few. Those offerings are there in the Swift Dzire, while the Tigor misses out on them.

In terms of entertainment and communication, both sedans have a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

On the safety front, the Tata Tigor misses out on brake assist, ISOFIX child-seat anchorages, speed alerts, an anti-pinch power window, etc. Furthermore, it doesn't get an ESC, rear seat belts, an anti-theft alarm, and child-safety locks, to name a few. Moreover, both cars get dual airbags; hence, the Tata Tigor's safety rating is far better than the Dzire's. The latter has a two-star safety rating, while the former has a four-star rating. So, what does that show? It means the vehicle's build quality matters, not safety features. Despite Tigor's price being on the lower side, its build quality is such that it will save lakhs of rupees from hospitalisation in the event of an accident. That is why the Tigor is one of the safest vehicles, like other new-age Tata cars in India

That said, you can refer to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson crash test. An SUV priced under a bracket of Rs 30–40 lakh with loads of safety features secured a zero-safety rating in the Latin NCAP. Many road accidents have taken place lately, and several mass-market carmakers are giving the best-in-class build quality, especially in emerging markets.

Nevertheless, some indigenous carmakers like Tata and Mahindra are producing vehicles that have secured at least a four-star safety rating from Global NCAP.

Performance

As mentioned earlier in the introduction, the Tata Tigor and the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire come with petrol and factory-fitted CNG kits. However, the Dzire misses out on an EV variant while the Tigor has it. The latter has a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 86PS and 113Nm of torque, and the former also has the same engine displacement and torque. But there is a difference in power, making it 90PS.

You can also check out the Tata Tigor review to know the driveability of this sub-four-metre sedan.

As for the fuel economy, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire's mileage ranges between 22.41kmpl and 31.12 km/kg. On the flip side, the Tata Tigor has a mileage ranging from 19.27kmpl to 26.49km/kg. Please note that these figures are ARAI-claimed. Mileage can vary based on an individual's driving style and traffic conditions.

Verdict

Both cars are pretty much the same. They also have nearly identical dimensions, including a wheelbase of 2450mm. An identical wheelbase also translates to the same amount of legroom. Besides that, customers are also concerned about fuel prices and efficiency. The claimed mileage of the Dzire is surely ahead, but when it comes to safety, it is behind the Tigor. In addition, the Tigor's mileage is also not bad, so if you are a buyer who wants safety and mileage at a lower price, then the Tata Tigor is the vehicle. After all, it all narrows down to customers' preferences.
