Use Common Sense to Safely Repair a Roof

Repairing your roof yourself isn't necessarily better, but it can be cheaper. Repairing a roof yourself for the first time is not recommended by professional roofing contractors. It's wise to have somebody with some experience show you how to repair a roof. Let them be there and tell you what to do. That way, if you ever have to do a roof repair again, you won't have to rely on professional roofing companies to fix and repair minor roofing jobs. Make sure you don't turn a little roofing job into a bigger one.

Make sure you wear the proper clothing. It is recommended to keep at least a short sleeve tee shirt on at all times when doing roof repairs. You must protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays when up on a roof all day. Roofing is hard enough, working with a sunburn makes it that much harder. Some roofing contractors prefer to wear long sleeves because they know they run a higher risk at getting skin cancer because their trade involves them being on the roof all day.

Always wear safety goggles when tearing off roof shingles or nailing them down. Anything is able to fly up and hit you in the eye which in turn may interfere with your depth perception and cause you to fall off the roof.

Wearing a pair of gym shoes (preferably running shoes) will prevent you from slipping off a roof a lot better than any pair of work boots. It doesn't matter how much a pair of work boots cost, an old pair of running shoes is what you'll need. The rubber soles in a pair of gym or running shoes is what gives the ability to grip the roof in a way that you can't do with a work boot.

Place the ladder firmly against the structure where getting off and on the roof is the easiest. Be sure that the base of the ladder is firmly set as well. Make sure the base of the ladder is at least three feet from the home or structure. Most roofing accidents are caused by the misplacement of the ladder.

Sweep a roof off and be sure to remove any leaf debris that may cause a slip and fall. Professional roofing companies and roofing contractors know all too well what could happen if a roof isn't free of even the smallest pile of loose gravel from an old shingle.

Carrying bundles of shingles up a ladder onto a roof is a job in itself. That alone is almost worth hiring a professional. Roofing companies usually have the bundles of shingles delivered and then lifted up on top. A small roofing company will usually have a crew that will just carry the bundles up on top.

A bundle of asphalt shingles can weigh around 80-90 pounds. Some bundles can literally weigh over a hundred pounds. Bundles of shingles wrapped in plastic can be stored outside in any weather, and three bundles will cover just less than one hundred square feet.
