With COVID-19 cases at an all-time low, Bhutan has finally confirmed that its borders will reopen to visitors on September 23, 2022

Bhutan Covid Entry Requirements

Despite sharing borders with China and India, Bhutan saw only a few COVID-19 pandemic cases. This is primarily due to obtaining vaccines from international donors and immunizing 90% of its eligible adult population in just seven days. This tiny Himalayan kingdom has distributed second doses in a mass immunization, one of the fastest vaccine programs ever performed during a pandemic.

With COVID-19 cases at an all-time low, Bhutan has finally confirmed that its borders will reopen to visitors on September 23, 2022, after being closed to outsiders for more than two years! However, the reopening of the borders complies with Bhutan's COVID entry requirements. So, if you're considering visiting Bhutan and have queries about Bhutan entry requirements COVID

Travel Information For International Visitors

With the reopening of borders, Bhutan has revised the sustainable development fees for international tourists from $65 per night per person to $200. The change in SFD was implemented to promote Bhutan as a high-end tourist destination, allowing visitors to enjoy the country's unique culture while significantly lowering its carbon footprint. Tourists will be free to work with and pay for their desired service providers. They can also choose the tour operator they want to partner with to obtain a Bhutan visa.

Bhutan Covid Entry Requirements For Tourists

All tourists to Bhutan must follow the following COVID-19 protocols established by the National Covid-19 Task Force (NC19TF):

  • Provide a certified laboratory's Covid-negative RT-PCR test result.
  • Stay in quarantine for 24 hours.
  • COVID-19 requires that all tests be paid for.
  • Follow the COVID-19 Protocol to the letter.
  • Health insurance is required.

Visa Travel Information

Tourists need a valid passport and a Bhutan visa to enter and exit Bhutan. Although visas are only provided on arrival, you must apply in advance through a tour operator and acquire visa permission before travelling. Keep a photocopy of your passport, visa pages, and flight ticket separate from the originals when travelling.

All visas are approved in Thimphu and are only provided to travellers who book directly with a locally licensed tour operator like Norbu Bhutan. The tour operator is responsible for submitting tourist visa applications. Before visiting Bhutan, all tourists (excluding natives of Bangladesh, India, and the Maldives) must acquire visa clearance from Thimphu.
