FREE STANDING WOOD STOVE

Metro Chimney can take care of all of your wood stove cleaning and maintenance needs. Many homes in Oregon have wood stove burning units in them as their main source of heat.  Free Standing Wood stoves are the most common wood stove found.

There are also Wood Stove Inserts, and Pellet Stoves (see below). Use of a wood stove requires proper cleaning yearly of the chimney to remove creosote deposits, and regular inspection of the installation and handling of ashes. Wood stove pipes are smaller than your standard chimney flue, and accumulate soot and creosote (Creosote is an inevitable by-product of burning wood, and is formed when wood smoke condenses on the inside of a cool chimney) buildup faster than a regular fireplace flue. That is because most wood stove pipes have a diameter of no more than 8 inches. When smoke rises up the pipe, it attaches itself onto the inside walls and builds on itself, closing down the passageway, and restricting proper venting flow. Cleaning the pipe ensures smoke flows out of the chimney and not back into your house.

A wood stoves benefit over a standard fireplace is that it has more air control for efficiency, but this efficiency is created from air passages that get clogged up during regular use. These passages must be cleaned yearly to properly control the airflow for that efficiency. The rule of thumb for proper and safe wood stove use is to clean it and it’s flue at least once a year, or after every 2 chords of wood burned in it.

WOOD STOVE INSERTS

Inserts

Wood stove Inserts (note-these do not include zero clearance firepalces-click here to see one ) are wood stoves that are designed to fit into existing masonry fireplaces. They have to be pulled out to be cleaned. WE DO NOT CLEAN INSERTS.

PELLET STOVES

pellet stove

A pellet stove is a stove that burns compressed wood to create heat by slowly feeding fuel from a storage container (hopper) into a burn-pot area. They create a constant flame that requires little to no physical adjustments. A pellet stove that is used during the winter needs cleaning more often than a standard wood stove.

WOOD STOVE LINER CLEANING

Our cleanings get rid of soot and creosote from the interior of your wood stove liner flue. Soot is magnetically attracted to itself, and will build up on itself, closing down the dimensions of the flue.  Every dimension is predicated on each other dimension in the mechanical working of a wood store.  When the flue size closes down from soot build up, the draft ability is vastly effected.  The picture below shows you what a dirty wood stove flue looks like and how the soot builds up and starts to close off the flue.  See the pictures below to see how the flue looks before and after a cleaning.

It is also important to clean a wood stove periodically to prevent the soot build up from corroding the metal on the interior of the flue, or rusting it.  Carbon, if left unchecked, will corrode everything on a molecular level.  To prolong the lifespan of your flue, if you use your wood stove, have it cleaned once a year and avoid costly flue replacement.

FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY SAFETY INSPECTION

During your Wood Stove cleaning, we look at all aspects of your system to give you a Safety Inspection Report on the condition of your fireplace/chimney. Any problem areas and repair recommendations will be noted on this inspection, which is also part of your receipt. We check your wood stove installation to be sure that there are no hazards created by the stove from improper installation, and that clearances from combustible surfaces are maintained. We also check the stove’s connections to make sure that there is no visible smoke when it is running properly. This in turn ensures that all the smoke is being burning in the wood stove itself, so it cannot condense on the chimney. Wood stove-pipe is also subjected to high temperatures and will corrode over time, therefore it must be checked periodically and replaced at the first sign of corrosion beyond safe limits.  If any repairs are necessary, we will tell you in the inspection so that you can contact a Wood Stove Installer for repair as the Oregon Construction Contractors Board has separated Chimney Contractors for performing repairs on wood stoves.

If you just need us to come out to inspect your chimney, but it does not need a cleaning, there is still a service call charge for this.
