What is an FPV drone Backpack Kit you ask?
Why many choose to use an FPV drone Backpack Kit? The FPV drone hobby is much more different than the RC plane hobby of the past in that most flights aren’t on an RC sanctioned field. What is an FPV drone Backpack Kit you ask? That question can only be answered by each user themselves because each pilot has different needs, budgets, and levels of skill and experience.
Depending on the backpack and multirotor size, you may need to take the props off or strap the multirotor to the outside. If you are flying a fixed-wing you may have to carry your aircraft instead of strapping it to your FPV drone backpack kit. This is mainly for multirotor FPV drone pilots that want to fly in unique (legal of course) locations.
Let’s start with the backpack itself which should be able to store and organize your necessities like the multirotor, transmitter, goggles, and batteries along with accessories like, tools and spare parts like extra props, screws, prop nuts. Some will even carry spare drones, motors, ESCs and even a battery-powered soldering iron to make field repairs right from their FPV drone backpack kit.
Quadcopter
The main piece of kit in your FPV drone backpack kit would be the multirotor itself. This all depends on your skill and commitment level. Let’s assume you are flying the standard FPV drone quadcopter with 5-inch props. Many backpacks use straps to secure the quad on the outside and some are designed to accommodate them inside with the props taken off of course. This also affects how easy it is to prepare for an FPV drone flight. Look for an FPV drone backpack kit that can utilize both methods so you can travel on an airline with everything secured. It will be useful to be able to strap the quad to your backpack when quickly changing locations between battery packs.
Transmitter
In order to control that quadcopter, you will need to fit a transmitter in your FPV drone backpack kit. There are many brands and models to chose from as well as price differences that will affect this decision. Brands like Futaba, FrSKy, Spektrum, and Flysky are a few popular brands commonly used with quadcopters today. FrSky makes a transmitter called the X-Lite which is in a “gamepad” style form making it easy to fit into an FPV drone backpack kit. If you like the more traditional style then you may want to look at longtime reliable brands like Futaba, but it comes with a higher price tag than the FrSky X-Lite.
Goggles
If you aren’t already aware of DJI’s FPV drone HD goggle and camera/VTX combo than do yourself a favor and check out the videos. In fact, the videos don’t do it justice until you have tried them in person. If you are on a budget the 5.8G video transmission VTXs and a set of Fatsharks will still provide you hours of fun. Video interference and range may occasionally limit your experiences with Analog (5.8G). As far as fitting any set of goggles in your FPV drone backpack kit, make sure they will not be crushed and the compartment is free of objects that aren’t secure from moving around and scratching the lenses on the goggles. You also want to make sure when you open your FPV drone backpack kit that the goggles are not directly exposed to the bright sunlight. It is a sure way to “burn” the screen regardless of the type of display.
Batteries
None of this would be possible without the Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery because they pack a punch, unlike any Nickle Metal Hydrate (NiMh) battery, could ever do. Along with this comes a great deal of responsibility when storing these energized packs in your FPV drone backpack kit. Since most pilots will be carrying fully-charged LiPo battery packs it is even more important to invest in a LiPo Fireproof bag that can accommodate multiple batteries. In many of these FPV drone backpack kits, one can utilize a separate compartment for LiPo batteries. Make sure there are no loose objects that can get between the positive and negative contacts on the battery to cause a spark and surely cause a fire.
Tools and Accessories
If your drone breaks anything and you don’t have any tools in your FPV drone backpack kit, then your flying day is abruptly ended. You can try and anticipate what you may need for your FPV drone backpack kit but ultimately experience will determine what that is. Other accessories to accommodate your equipment like a spare transmitter and goggle batteries and extra propellers. If you are using an action camera to record your flights you may want to bring extra batteries for that and spare SD cards in your FPV drone backpack kit.
