Succinic Acid
Succinic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with the following composition (CH═ cis: OH-alkaline cis: H OH-alkaline) C 6 H 10 O 9. Succinic acid can be obtained in its simplest form in the form of juice or oil extracted from citrus fruits. It is usually found as a thin white film on the peel. There are two types of succinic acid available - sulfated and non-sulfated. The sulfated form is often used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications where it has a drying effect. The non-sulfated form has no drying effect and can be used for skin application. It is considered less efficient than sulfated acid but may be preferred for certain applications.
Succinic Acid belongs to the genre of alpha-hydroxy acids which include glycolic, lactic, and tartaric acids. It works by destroying the intercellular matrix in cells and is considered to be highly effective at treating acne. It is commonly applied as a topical agent in the form of a cream or gel. Some other related compound names include fruit acids, euterpeptide and tartannol. Succinic Acid is effective in treating acne, warts, cuts, and burns. Succinic Acid is known to promote the growth of healthy skin tissues and collagen. The acid exfoliates the top layer of skin thereby promoting a smoother skin texture. Furthermore, it prevents scars from forming and reduces pore size and inflammation of the skin.
Succinic Acid is also used to treat dry skin. It works by providing nourishment to the skin cells through a process called oxidation. Succinic Acid is found to be most useful in cases of dry skin due to its moisturizing properties. However, it can cause irritation and dryness of the skin. This is usually only a short-term side effect. Succinic Acid is also effective in treating severe forms of skin blemishes. It is usually applied topically and works by removing the outermost dead layer of skin cells called the stratum corneum.
