Nomenclature and Classification of Bunker Fuel
Bunker Fuel

The naming system for marine bunker fuels adds a layer of complexity to the topic. The numerous grades of marine fuels are frequently described using both common and defined naming systems. For decades, the phrase "bunker fuel" has been used as a catch-all. Bunker fuels have traditionally been classified into three categories: A, B, and C.

Bunker A was often associated with No. 2 fuel oil, bunker B with No. 4 or No. 5 fuel oil, and bunker C, the most widely used Bunker Fuel, was generally associated with No. 6 fuel oil. The five different grades within the IFO 180 and IFO 380 groups are defined by variances in carbon residue, ash, and vanadium concentration. The ISO established further subtleties to discern like-grade bunker fuels with variances in inorganic residuals as recently as 2005.
