Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems worldwide. The rates of occurrence, however, differ by region. According to a survey issued by the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation in 2014, one out of every four adults in Canada experienced constipation symptoms in 2014. In Canada, women had nearly double the rate of chronic constipation as males.
Constipation is becoming more common in other developed economies, such as the United States and the United Kingdom. According to a survey issued by Coloplast, a global leader in ostomy care, urology and continence care, and wound and skin care, one in every seven persons in the United Kingdom suffered with constipation in 2014-2015. The situation was significantly worse for youngsters, with one out of every three experiencing constipation in 2014-2015.
