It's a shame that James Y. Simpson emphasised the simplicity with which chloroform may be used to induce unconsciousness without the usage of specialised equipment. The potential benefits were not lost on the criminal underworld, who were keen to try a range of crimes under its influence, including rape and robbery. Unlike the cudgel, garrotte, and pistol, administering chloroform to another was not a felony in English law unless the intent was murder or abortion! Chloroform had been employed for various illegal reasons as early as 1851, as evidenced by a well-known cartoon in Punch magazine that year.
