Google Chromecast is a useful casting device, but sometimes due to malfunction or some other issues we need to reset Chromecast. We have prepared a guide to easily reset different generation Chromecasts. While troubleshooting Chromecast, reset is the nuclear option to fix some of the normal bugs.

Chromecast devices including Chromecast with Google TV are known for being simple, but that doesn’t mean they don’t require a reboot or factory reset from time to time. We’ll show you how to do it in a few different ways.

“Rebooting” a device simply means turning it off and back on again. A “Factory Reset” will remove everything from the device and restore it to the way it was when you turned it on for the first time. Both can be used to fix problems.

What Does Resetting a Google Chromecast Do?

Resetting your Chromecast is quick and easy. The process of resetting your Chromecast only takes a few minutes and restores its original factory settings. This means you can start fresh on a device that is similar to a brand new one.

There are three main methods of resetting a Google Chromecast. To begin with, ensure that your Chromecast is properly connected to your TV and also connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone, computer, or tablet.

Reset Chromecast – All Generations

Chromecast with Google TV is already available in the US, Europe, and other regions. Google will soon make it available in India and some other Asian countries.

Using Voice Remote

  • Turn on the Chromecast with Google TV and select your Profile > Settings on your TV screen.
  • Then head over to the System > About > Factory reset.
  • It will take a few minutes to reset.
  • That’s it!

From Chromecast itself

  • Plug the Chromecast into the HDMI port of your TV.
  • Now, press and hold the button present on the Chromecast until the yellow light turns solid white.
  • Release the button once the light turns solid white.
  • Now, the device will reset.

From Home App

  • Update and Open Google Home App.
  • Now locate your device Tile from the device list, and tap it.
  • Then, tap on Settings > More (Three Dots) > Factory Reset > Factory Reset. 
  • It will take some time before resetting.

Surprisingly, Google is working to launch an affordable Chromecast HD with Google TV this year. The device recently appeared on the FCC hinting at some specifications and features.

Chromecast 3rd Generation

Launched in 2018, the device features 1080p streaming capability. The dimensions measures 51.81 mm × 51.81 mm × 13.8 mm (2.04 in × 2.04 in × 0.54 in) with 40g weight. However, there were only minimal changes between the 2nd and 3rd Generation Chromecasts. In case you want to reset the Chromecast 3rd generation.

Using Home App

  • Resetting via Home App is the easiest way if you’re connected to the same network where the device is set up.
  • Open Google Home App.
  • Navigate to the Chromecast 3rd Generation device and ‘Tap’ on the tile.
  • Tap the Settings icon and then open More (Three Horizontal Dots).
  • Now, Tap on the Factory Reset button to erase anything and make it the same as a brand new device.

Using Reset Button Present on Chromecast

  • Turn on the device and then hold the reset button for a few seconds until the white light turns on.
  • After releasing the button, it will take a few seconds to reboot.
  • You can successfully erase Chromecast settings and data. It is now at the factory conditions.

Chromecast 2nd generation

  • Chromecast Ultra
  • There’s a minimal change in the sequence to factory reset the newer Chromecasts. 

Using Google Home App

  • Update and then Open the Google Home app.
  • Now, tap the Chromecast device and select Settings from the top right corner.
  • Tap More, and then tap Factory reset > Factory reset.
  • Wait for a few seconds and that’s it!

From Device Itself

  • Turn on the Chromecast attached TV.
  • Hold the Chromecast button for a few seconds. Meanwhile, the orange light will continuously blink.
  • Hold until the white light turns on.
  • Now, release the button to reboot the Chromecast.

Using Google Home App

  • Make sure you have updated Google Home App.
  • Open Google Home App and Tap on Chromecast devices.
  • Tap Settings at the top right corner.
  • Now, Tap More or the three-dot icon > Factory reset > Factory reset.

From the Chromecast itself

  • Turn on the TV where Chromecast is connected.
  • Now, hold the button present on the rear side for a few seconds until a solid LED light starts flashing.
  • The TV will go blank and Chromecast will reboot

How to Re-Install a Chromecast

Let's say you were successful in factory resetting your Chromecast. After resetting, you would have to set the Chromecast again. Don't worry, it won't take a lot of your time. Just follow these steps, and you're ready to connect your phone again.

  • Plug your Chromecast device on the TV and the power outlet. If your TV has a USB port, you can plug it here instead of a power outlet. If you are using the Chromecast Ultra, you would need to connect the Chromecast to the power outlet itself because the power coming from the TV will not be enough.
  • Install the Google Home app on the phone that you will be using to connect with the TV.
  • Once it is downloaded, click Get started. This will direct you to options for connecting your account.
  • If you have a Google account, you can choose that account. If you want a separate account, click 'Use another account'. Type the details of your account and then click 'OK' at the bottom right of the page.
  • When connecting your Chromecast device, the app will ask you to turn on Bluetooth (if it isn't turned on yet). If it's not yet connected, turn it on in your device.
  • Once Bluetooth is connected, the Google Home app will start looking for the Chromecast device. Devices found will appear on the screen. Click the Chromecast device you wish to connect and click Next.
  • After clicking next, you will hear a sound coming from the Chromecast device. If there's a sound, click Yes. If not, click Try again.
  • Choose the region where you are located and click Continue.
  • Choose your preferred language and tap Next.
  • Choose the room/area where the Chromecast device is and click Next. You can also create a new room if the rooms you have are not included in the initial list.
  • You will now be directed to a screen to choose your network to connect. Choose the Wi-Fi network you want to connect it to and enter the Wi-Fi password. Then, click Next.
  • Since Chromecast has Google Assistant features, you can set this up too. Simply click 'Next' and start with Voice Match.
  • Once you've set up Voice Match, click Next and you will see a notification saying Google Home is ready.
