There are a selection of movie trends over the years that have largely changed the way in which film production takes place. Nowadays, continuity in movies is highly appreciated, which can be seen in just how well sequels will commonly do. If characters from a film were able to truly resonate with an audience, then it is likely that the same audience will wish to view more of them in another movie. That being said, it can take time to build familiarity to the point where a franchise is considered a beneficial investment. The best known film franchises oftentimes span decades, which is attributable to the movies performing well with audiences reliably. That being said, it can be risky to produce a movie with the intention of it being a franchise from the get-go, as there are no assurances that it will perform well, leaving an unfinished product that won’t hold up particularly well. There are just a few exceptions where it is considered quite safe to push for a franchise from the start, however.
