Global HydroxypropylAcrylate Market: Introduction
Hydroxypropyl acrylate is a colorless liquid with a slightacrylic odor. It is readily miscible with water and a majority of organicsolvents. Hydroxypropyl acrylate consists of typically 350 to 650 ppm (partsper million) of the monomethyl ether of hydroquinone. This monomethyl ether ofhydroquinone is added as an inhibitor that helps prevent polymerization underrecommended storage conditions. Hydroxypropyl acrylate is normally available inpurity of 97.0% and more. It may also contain as much as 1% residual acrylicacid and up to 3% of other similar esters of acrylic acid. Atypicalhydroxypropyl acrylate samples contains approximately 75%-80% 2-hydroxypropylacrylate and 20%-25% of 1-methlyl-2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. Hydroxypropylacrylate is produced through the reaction between propylene oxide and acrylicacid. In this reaction, two isomers of hydroxypropyl acrylate are formed. Inboth of these isomers, after a polyacrylate is formed at the double bond, thependant –OH group is available for further reactions.
Hydroxypropyl acrylate is primarily used to manufacturecross-linkable polymer coatings and adhesives. It is produced and primarilyused in closed systems. Its major use is either as a co-monomer in themanufacture of polymers or as a chemical reactant in the manufacture ofchemical intermediates. Hydroxypropyl acrylate is used in the productionof pressure sensitive adhesives, ion exchange resins, emulsion polymers, resinsfor radiation-curable coatings, heat-curable automotive clear coats, etc. Risein demand for automotives across all regions is driving demand forhydroxypropyl acrylate. However, severe health concerns associated withhydroxypropyl acrylate may hamper its demand. Excessive exposure tohydroxypropyl acrylate may cause severe eye and skin irritation. Injuriesrelated to hydroxypropyl acrylate may be slow to heal. However, direct consumerexposure to hydroxypropyl acrylate is negligible as it is used as co-monomer inpolymers.
