Fireplace cleaning Portland, Oregon City, Fireplace cleaning Beaverton

Metro Chimney specializes in Standard Fireplace cleaning. During the cleaning, we will take care of the interior of your house by laying down runner blankets from the fireplace to the nearest doorway of entry. We clean all aspects of your fireplace, cleaning the flue, firebox, and most importantly, the smoke shelf, or engine for your chimney.

Fireplaces work on inversion, and that inversion process starts in the Smoke Shelf. The Smoke Shelf resides behind the angled part of the back wall of your fireplace. The fire in the fireplace heats up the back wall, which is made of fireclay mortar, and transfers the heat to the Smoke Shelf behind it. Cold air above the chimney has to drop per the laws of inversion as there is now hot air below. As it travels down your chimney, it gets warmer. When it reaches the Smoke Shelf, the air is hot and now must rise. As the air rises, it carries the smoke out with it, and this causes a chimney’s draft. When that area is filled with soot, your chimneys draft is greatly effected. Cleaning out this area allows the engine of your fireplace to work properly again.

This is not the only reason to clean your fireplace.

THE INSIDE YOUR CHIMNEY FLUE

The flue is the passageway in your fireplace that allows the smoke to rise up and out of it. The dimensions of your flue, as well as every other component making up your fireplace is based on measurements that must work together. As the smoke rises up your flue, itclings to the walls of the flue, thereby closing off the flue. Solids burn up as carbon, which we call soot, and can build upon itself to close down the interior dimension of your flue, causing it to become ineffective. But more importantly, liquids turn to steam and then coat the interior of your fireplace as well, and is called Creosote.

creosote

The more wet wood you burn, the more creosote your flue will have. If allowed to build up over time, it can superheat, and turn into 3rd degree creosote.

3rd degree creosote

This is the cause of chimney fires. So the cleaning of your chimney not only returns your flues interior dimensions to it’s proper working dimensions, but if early, can stop creosote build up before it is not removable with a sweep, and other actions are needed to ensure your chimneys safe use.

FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY SAFETY INSPECTION

During your chimney cleaning, we look at all aspects of your system to give you a Safety Inspection Report on the condition of your fireplace/chimney.  Any problem areas and repair recommendations will be noted on this inspection, which is also a part of your receipt. If any repairs are necessary, we will e-mail you an estimate to repair those area of the chimney.

If you just need us to come out to inspect your chimney, but it does not need to be cleaned, there is still a service call charge for this service.

Schedule a chimney cleaning appointment today for one of our chimney sweeps to come out and make your fireplace safe to use.
