Electromagnetic brake slow or stop motion using electromagnetic force to apply mechanical resistance (friction). Electromagnetic brakes eventually depend on friction and eddy current brakes use magnetic force directly. In locomotives, a mechanical linkage transmits torque to an electromagnetic braking component.
