Cargo handled across Indian airports up 35%, Delhi continues to lead

Airports across India saw a 35 percent increase in cargo handled for the first ten months of the current financial year (April-March) to 2.6 million tonnes.

While international cargo handled was up 36 percent to 1.6 million tonnes, domestic cargo handled was up 32 percent to 977,760 tonnes. Aircraft movements increased 37 per cent to 247,920, and passengers zoomed over 80 percent to 147 million during the April-January period.

There was only a marginal increase (0.5 percent) in cargo handled to 246,600 tonnes in January 2022 from the same period last year with over 5 percent increase in international cargo to 151,070 tonnes and a 6 percent decline in domestic cargo to 95,530 tonnes.

Delhi continued to be the leader among the seven joint venture international airports by handling 507,339 MT during the April-January period - an increase of over 37 percent. All the other JV international airports - Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin also reported high double digit growth.

New JV international airports - Nagpur and Kannur - reported 329 MT and 759 MT during the reporting period, respectively.

Among the 15 international airports in India, Amritsar saw a near doubling of international freight to 646 MT in the 10 months period to January 2022.

On the domestic freight market, Mumbai reported the highest increase (over 52 percent) to 177,581 MT but Delhi, again,continued to be the overall leader with freight handled totalling 268,912 MT.
