An Intelligent Flow Meter Has No Moving Parts, Unlike A Mechanical Flow Meter
Using ultrasound or any other method, an Intelligent Flow Meter measures a fluid's velocity in order to determine its volume flow. Both non-contact and contact type sensors can detect flow, however an intelligent flow metre only records non-contact flow measurements. Intelligent flow metres typically emit a laser or ultrasonic beam into a moving fluid, which is reflected by the fluid and displays the fluid's movement or velocity on the screen.

Temperature, viscosity, density, and any suspended particulates have no effect on intelligent flow metres. Unlike mechanical flow metres, Intelligent Flow Meter are electrical devices without any moving parts. The measurement of large-scale fluid movement is done with flow metres. Both contact and non-contact sensors can be used to measure flow, but intelligent flow metres use non-contact methods. Intelligent flow metres often emit a laser beam or an ultrasonic beam that is reflected back by the fluid in motion, displaying the fluid's movement or velocity on the screen as a result.The movement of fluids is measured by flowmeters in terms of mass or volume, which can then be converted to the other when the density of the liquid being measured is known. 

Due to the fact that gas density changes with pressure, temperature, and the composition of the gas mixture, flow metres cannot rely on density conversions of gases. Mass flow metres and volume flow metres are the two main types of flow metres, with gases and liquids serving as their respective primary uses. Intelligent Flow Meter can also be distinguished based on how they measure flow: Mechanical: bucket (the amount of time it takes to fill a meter-housed container), piston, turbine (axial) flow metre (calculates flow rate from mechanical action against impeller), pressure-based metres, optical flow metres (lasers that calculate flow rates from tiny particles passing by in a pipe).
