The erythrocyte sedimentation rate, sometimes referred to as the ESR Analyzer or sed rate, is a clinical lab test that gauges how quickly red blood cells from whole blood flow into a standard tube. The result is expressed in millimetres per hour (mm/h). Red blood cells that are inflammatory settle more quickly than healthy blood cells during this test, which measures inflammation. As a result, higher inflammation may be indicated by a high ESR, albeit other diseases like anaemia, renal failure, and obesity may also cause an increase in ESR. ESR testing has a procedure, but it is now common practice to use an automated analyzer to carry out this test.
