The FC Barcelona Jersey's Evolution
FC Barcelona Jersey has achieved success in Spain's top football competition, La Liga, since its inception. Their trophy cabinet has also grown fairly full along the road

Futbol Club Barcelona was created in 1899 by soccer pioneer Joan Gamper, who advertised in a local paper and drew the attention of 11 other soccer fans. Since then, the club has grown to become the world's second-most valuable football organization and one of the most popular clubs on the planet.

History of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona Jersey has achieved success in Spain's top football competition, La Liga, since its inception. Their trophy cabinet has also grown fairly full along the road. FC Barcelona Jersey has won 29 Copa del Rey championships and multiple Champions League titles in addition to 24 La Liga titles (most recently in 2015-2016, and second only to rival club Real Madrid) (most recently in 2014-2015).

Because this team has been active for almost a century, its uniforms have naturally evolved throughout time. As you might expect, Barcelona's current star, Lionel Messi, does not wear the outfit that players like Paulino Alcántara wore in the early twentieth century. The kit colors, on the other hand, have remained consistent: blue and claret, a rich purplish-red.

Continue reading to see how the FC Barcelona Jersey kit has grown throughout time, as well as how the club's blue and claret stripes have altered yet remained so strikingly identical.

Beginnings of Barcelona

The first FC Barcelona Jersey, introduced in 1899, is simple, with stripes and a normal collar. It has four thick, alternating blue and claret stripes on the sleeves and two on the main body. Carles Comamala, a prolific goalscorer, is one of the early players who will take over for Barcelona founder Gamper when he retires.

Barcelona adds a tie closure to the neck of the jersey in the 1920s, which was worn by players such as Ramon Torralba Larraz, a 14-season great. There are considerably more alternating stripes on the sleeves and torso than in earlier iterations. Despite a few variations, the stripes on the principal part of the shirt remain consistent today.

1925: The normal collars are replaced with a small crew neck design, removing the tie closures, which do not feature again on the FC Barcelona Jersey.

1969: The crew neck collar will be a fixture on blue and claret jerseys for decades, dozens of players, and several seasons. The normal collar makes a resurgence in the late 1960s, and one player, Francisco Fernández "Gallego," proudly wears it for 11 seasons with Barça.Foot ball Jersey provides the latest design.

1982: Standard collars are still used in 1980s kits. Javier González Urruticoechea, a key player in the 1984-1985 season, is one player who not only wears the jersey but also wins fans' admiration for his charisma and monumental save that ensures Barcelona's league victory with four matches remaining.

2000: A throwback to the past happens around the turn of the century, with two strong stripes on the main body (one of each hue) and solid dark blue sleeves. Despite not being a direct striker, Vitor Borba Ferreira "Rivaldo" plays throughout this clothing change and racks up goals.

2002: The outfits have thinner stripes and a brighter crimson than the preceding claret. This, however, does not endure long. The color returns to a darker reddish-purple in 2007. Samuel Eto'o is a Barcelona footballer who wears the brighter red jersey and was the league's best scorer in 2004-2005.

Barcelona's jersey continues to change in 2013, with a single red stripe down the center and blue sleeves. Lionel Messi appears in another shirt design in 2015, this time with a minor reversal of the original blue and claret color scheme.

2016: The jersey looks more like earlier incarnations, with the typical blue stripe surrounded by reds, then lined with blue sides and sleeves.
