Coverage and surface runoff
The surface cover is an important factor in erosion control as it reduces the impact of raindrops falling on bare ground and windblown soil particles. It also reduces the speed of water flow over the ground. The risk of erosion is significantly reduced when the soil cover is greater than 30%. Full coverage is achievable for many grazing and cropping systems.
Runoff is concentrated as it descends the slope. When rivers that drain large watersheds reach the coast, they are usually only a few hundred meters wide. Although surface coverage facilitates runoff propagation, runoff concentrations are unavoidable. Coordination across the watershed is important in implementing flow regulation measures. Runoff may pass through multiple properties and cross multiple roads (sometimes train tracks) as it flows from the outermost part of the basin to the main drainage line or stream.
