Contact lenses prevent the size distortion that happens with thick corrective lenses, which is a particular benefit when addressing problems that can only be partially repaired by prescription eyeglasses. The majority of contacts, however, cannot be worn overnight due to the elevated risk of serious corneal infections. In order to increase flexibility, larger "soft" lenses comprised of a plastic gel that absorbs water were created.
