Food that has been packaged in a sealed package, other than an open box, glass, or other containers, that can be opened without losing the edible contents, is referred to as "packaged food" in the sense of the US FDA definition of food. This is how most foods are packaged for sale. Hot dogs, hot cereals, soup mixes, snack foods, ready-to-eat cereals, dry mixes, and snack foods such as chips, pretzels, cookies, and instant rice/pasta are examples of packed food items. Packaged food sales account for roughly half of the fresh food market in the United States.
