Ativan (lorazepam) is a prescription tranquilizing treatment. You can also hear it called sedative-hypnotic or anxiolytic medication. Ativan belongs to a class of chemicals called benzodiazepines.
Ativan is used to relieve symptoms of anxiety, insomnia (sleep trouble), and epileptic status (a form of extreme seizure). It's also given to make you sleep before surgical procedure.
Ativan is available in a simplified form called lorazepam. Generic medications are often pricier than the brand name version. In some cases, the brand name and generic version of the medication may be available in a variety of forms and strengths.
Ativan might combine with a variety of other medications. It may also interact with certain medicines and foods. Similar interactions may have different effects. Of instance, others may interfere with how well a medication operates, while others may lead to increased side effects.
