Paddle Boarding for Kids: How to Keep Them Safe While Having an Awesome Time
Kids love having fun outdoors and in water, so it makes sense to introduce the little ones in your life to paddle boarding. While paddle boarding is typically thought of as a “grown-up” activity, this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s a family-friendly activity with tons of potential for adventure lovers of nearly every age. Before you hit the water, here are three safety tips to keep in mind.

Kids love having fun outdoors and in the water, so it only makes sense to introduce the little ones in your life to paddle boarding. While paddle boarding is typically thought of as a “grown-up” activity, this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s a family-friendly activity with tons of potential for adventure lovers of nearly every age. Paddle boarding isn’t particularly complicated, and it can be very safe—which should always be a top priority when introducing kids to this fun pastime. With an emphasis on safety, kids can have all sorts of fun during their first adventure on the water. As you introduce your kids to the wonderful world of paddle boarding, make sure to keep these safety tips in mind before hitting the water.

Get the Paddle Boarding Basics Down

Your little ones may be excited to get on the water with their inflatable paddle board, but it’s important to know the paddle boarding basics first. Show them how to stand on the board, keeping their knees bent and their feet separated. The idea is to help them find their center of balance. Just as important is showing them how to use the paddle so they can guide themselves across the water. For younger kids, it can be a good idea to take them out on your board to show them the ropes and serve as a guide if they have questions or need assistance. Older kids might be able to go out on their own from the beginning, but it’s always best to stay close by if they need help. The most important thing, however, is to be a supportive voice on the water. Paddle boarding is all about having fun and supporting them as they learn new skills.

Use Personal Flotation Devices

Let’s be honest, plenty of adults skip the personal flotation devices (PFDs) when they paddle board. But as kids test the waters for the first time on an inflatable SUP board, a PFD is absolutely essential. Even if your kids seem like strong swimmers, never underestimate the water. Kids may protest, but a PFD is a piece of safety gear that offers you peace of mind and helps keep kids afloat if they lose their balance and take a dip in the water. You can even wear a PFD to show your child how important safety is on the water. For an added layer of safety, make sure they have a SUP leash, as well. The SUP leash attaches to their ankle with a flexible cord that connects them to the paddle board. If they fall off, it makes getting back to the board that much easier.

Stay Protected from the Elements

When kids are having fun on the water, they can end up spending hours—if not all day—having a blast on their inflatable SUP board. Of course, while they’re out having fun, it’s easy to forget to stay protected against the elements—namely, the sun. If you skip the sunblock, paddle boarding is an easy way to get a sunburn. Between direct sunlight and sunlight reflected off the water, you’re in for a hefty dose of UV rays. Before your kids paddle away, make sure they apply sunblock to every square inch of sun-exposed skin. Don’t forget to apply it to yourself, too. And remember, one application is never enough. Follow the recommendations on your sunblock and continue to reapply throughout the day. Kids might not like coming back to shore for another layer of sunblock, but that few minutes is worth it over a week or two with an uncomfortable burn. Other strategies for sun protection can include wearing sunglasses, a hat with a wide brim, and sun-protective clothing.
