Optimising the Transportation Costs of a Leading Fire Equipment Manufacturer in Singapore with Beacon Based Solution
One of our clients is a leading Fire Equipment Manufacturer in Singapore. They install fire equipment devices of various types & sizes to offices, warehouses & commercial complexes across Singapore & Malaysia. As a part of their contract, they undertake annual maintenance, which requires the equipment to be transported to their factory for necessary refilling of materials & testing before installed again at client premises. They have a fleet of trucks for transportation, with drivers on their payrols.
The client wanted to have full control over the truck movements. The GPS devices proved to be costlier while the mobile app was easily prone for misuse. Though the work was assigned to individual drivers with job details ( like materials to transport & locations ), the management couldn’t reduce the clubbing of jobs by drivers. This delayed the movement of goods while drivers still enjoyed full reimbursement of double transportation.
The first thing we did is to rework on the mobile app installed in each of the driver’s smart phones provided by the client. The Uber-like mobile app with its GPS tracking system tracked the location data in real time capturing run time, idle time & down time.
However, this alone will not become a complete solution as the chances of misuse is still present. There existed a loophole for the drivers of the vehicles to “stage” a trip and yet not undertake any journey at all. All they needed to do was merely link/migrate the Mobile phone of their designated vehicle to another vehicle that is actually involved in a real journey and make believe a false journey.
We wanted to connect the mobile app ( of driver ) to the truck used for transportation during the entire journey to make sure that specified driver is using that particular truck for the entire journey.
And, the Bluetooth Beacon became part of the solution.
Accordingly, each vehicle is fitted with a Beacon unbeknownst to the driver, which will synchronise with the mobile app once the driver logs in. Rather than merely tracking the vehicle alone, the system now tracks the driver, as well. Thus, if he or she stages a trip and claims the fare, his claim will be countered with the actual whereabouts of the driver in question via the recorded trip history.

The addition of beacon hardly added any additional cost, but created a foolproof system, eliminating costs due to false claims & increasing the efficiency of operations.
