Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a type of cancer in which epithelial cells are mutated, causing them to differentiate into epithelial cells in the bile duct. The specific cause of bile duct cancer is unknown, but other factors that contribute to the development of bile duct cancer include biliary stones, long-term inflammation in the liver, abnormalities in the bile duct such as cysts, infection with the liver flukes parasite, which causes infection in the bile duct leading to cancer, and exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins.
