With iCloud, it is pretty easy to back up the iPad. Apple’s cloud service always encrypts your backup for the needed safeguard against hacking. Moreover, it lets you sync the data across iDevices like iPhone and Mac for convenient access.

Wondering what’s included in the iCloud backup? It includes several important things including Apple Watch back-ups, App data, device settings, home screen and app organization, iMessage, text (SMS), MMS messages, photos and videos, purchase history from Apple services including music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books.

The iCloud backup also consists of ringtones and visual voicemail password. It’s worth noting that Apple offers just 5GB of free iCloud storage. So, ensure that you have enough iCloud storage to backup your iPad with iCloud.

The tech giant offers three iCloud storage plans. 50 GB: Rs 75/month, 200 GB: Rs 219/month, 2 TB: Rs 749/month. Just in case you don’t have sufficient cloud storage, head over to Settings > your profile > iCloud > Manage Storage or iCloud Storage. Now, tap on Buy More Storage and then choose the preferred storage plan.

Now that you are familiar with iCloud backup, let’s get started with steps!

Step 1. Be sure your iPad is connected with a Wi-Fi network. Open Settings app > your profile > iCloud.

Step 2. Now, select iCloud Backup. After that, tap on Backup Now to start backing up your device.

Once your device has been backed up, it will show the date and time of the last backup

There is also an option to automatically backup iPad with iCloud. It’s done once in 24 hours. To do so, ensure that iCloud Backup is enabled. Then, connect your iPad to a power source > connect to a Wi-Fi network. After that, make sure the screen is locked.

Bear in mind that the iCloud backup will happen only if you have enough storage in the cloud. Else, the backup will fail and you will get a message (in the settings) saying something like, “iCloud storage failed due to lack of sufficient cloud storage.”

You can use your Mac or Windows PC to backup your iPad locally. For additional security, iTunes/Finder allows you to encrypt the backup to prevent unauthorized access.

You need to first erase your device before being able to restore it from iCloud. Yeah, it is a rather tedious affair. Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

Once you have erased your device, follow the on-screen instructions to set it up again. Along the way, iPadOS will let you backup the iPad from iCloud backup. Choose it and you are ready to go!

It’s quite straightforward to restore an iPad from a computer. Do note that if your Mac is running macOS Catalina or later, you need to use Finder to restore your iPadOS device from Mac.

You can still use iTunes on your Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier or Windows to restore your iPad.

To get going, connect your iPad to your computer > choose your device. After that, click on Restore iPad. Now, choose the latest backup and confirm.

Important note:

Do note that it will restore only the last saved data on your iPadOS device. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that the iPad data, which you had never backed up, will be lost when you restore the device to the previous backup.
